How to Write a Novel: Luxury Pens Included

If you want to write a book, you will learn a lot about patience. But that isn’t mean to discourage you; just the opposite – patience is the highest virtue. Here are some ideas about how to do it.

1. Idea: It’s very important to have a clear idea of what you want to express in writing your book. There should be a clear problem that your protagonist has to solve, or fail to solve, by the story’s end.

2. Characters: It’s important to create characters that are memorable and distinct from each other. A good way to do this is to outline some physical character traits, clothing, affectations or any other idiosyncrasies you want them to have.

3. Protagonist/Counterpart: The main character is the most important character in your novel. This is usually because he is the narrator, and the person through whose eyes we see most of the action. These three aspects of the protagonist do not necessarily have to be united. Additionally, you need a counterpart character who influences your protagonist. This doesn’t have to be the antagonist, though traditionally it is. Instead, it can be a character’s lover, for example, who shows him a different way to reach the goal of the story.

4. Setting: Most of the time the setting won’t have a huge influence on your story. But it does when you want to express your theme through the setting. If your character needs to understand what it means to be alone, the effects of a large, imposing city and a tropical island will be vastly different.

5. Theme: Instead of delivering a simple theme, you may want to put pressure on your theme and ask if its opposite has any merit. This will help you avoid a traditional or cliche theme, and will make the story more interesting.

6. Outline: Before you sit down to write create four main aspects to your outline: the inciting event, the rising tension, the climax, and the resolution. Then you should work on how your main character will be influenced at each of these points, by showing how at first he has his own way, which may or may not be successful, second, how he begins to change his perspective; third, his main crisis – his turning point; and finally, whether his choice was a good one or a bad one.

You don’t have to write all this down with luxury pens, but it might make it easier. You’ll feel more like a professional, and whether you have Parker fountain pens or Waterman fountain pens, you’ll be well on your way to writing a cohesive, comprehensive novel.
